Imposing inequality restrictions: efficiency gains from economic theory

چکیده
Econometricians may feel that imposing inequality restrictions improves statistical efficiency, but no real empirical evidence exists. The results of a Monte Carlo experiment show that imposing the curvature conditions on a system of demand equations improves the MSEs on estimated elasticities from 3 to 50% depending on the signal-to-noise ratio and the sample size. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Pre-marital Confinement of Women: A Signaling and Matching Approach
Parents in several cultures `discipline' their daughters to inculcate the supposedly feminine virtues and improve their prospects in the marriage market. This process invariably involves imposing restrictions on their behavior, movement, and social relations. We formalize the idea that pre-marital confinement of women can be understood as an equilibrium outcome of a game of asymmetric informati...
متن کاملThe Gains of Economic Integration: Substantive Evidence for an Australia-Korea Free Trade Agreement
Abstract On 6 December 2006, Australia and Korea announced a joint study on a possible Australia-Korea free trade agreement (AKFTA) to promote trade and economic relations between the two countries. The paper provides empirical evidence on the possible gains and their transmission mechanism from this agreement. Significantly, it uses a new economic policy modelling approach, the endogenous grav...
متن کاملEfficiency Costs of Social Objectives in Tradable Permit Programs
Objectives of tradable permit programs are often broader than internalizing an externality and improving economic efficiency. Many programs are designed to accommodate community, cultural, and other non-efficiency goals through restrictions on trading. However, restrictions can decrease economic efficiency gains. We use a policy experiment from the Alaska halibut and sablefish tradable permit p...
متن کاملOut-of-Sample Equity Premium Prediction: Consistently Beating the Historical Average
While a host of economic variables have been identified in the literature with the apparent in-sample ability to predict the equity premium, Goyal and Welch (2007) find that these variables fail to deliver consistent out-of-sample forecast gains relative to the historical average. Imposing theoretically motivated restrictions on individual predictive regression models, Campbell and Thompson (20...
متن کاملWho Gains from Child Labor? A Politico-Economic Investigation
This paper develops a positive theory of the adoption of child labor restrictions (CLR). The key mechanism in our model is an interaction between parental decisions on family size and their preferences for CLR. While parents with few children have little to gain from child labor and are therefore likely to favor CLR, parents with many working children would be expected to oppose CLR. Fertility ...
